The Higher Education landscape has changed dramatically in the last decade and, increasingly, universities are investing heavily in enhanced marketing functions to enable them to compete in an increasingly crowded and competitive global market.

With the launch of a new institutional strategy and brand positioning this November, we have created a new, senior level post, to provide strategic and operational leadership to a newly restructured directorate that brings together our Communications and Marketing Team with Student Recruitment, Access and Admissions. The Director of External Relations will play a critical role in ensuring that the University’s ambitious plans to increase domestic and international student recruitment and raise its profile with a range of audiences in the UK and overseas including media, alumni, government and the broader HE community, are realised.

This new Directorate will have overall responsibility for managing the University’s external relations and the newly appointed Director of External Relations will ensure a joined-up, synergistic approach to promoting the University to a wide range of external stakeholders. An important element of this will be to raise awareness of the University’s key messages and current priorities. To effectively realise the University’s new vision, staff across the newly created division will need to work synergistically and collaboratively to achieve our common and ambitious goals.

The new Division will deliver a cutting edge approach to the University’s admissions, recruitment and marketing activities which will position us effectively in a highly competitive global market. His or her team will include highly effective brand managers, who both maximise the value of the University’s brand and profile, and enhance our reputation.

The successful candidate will inspire and motivate their team to be client-focused and innovative, supporting the needs of faculties and schools, so they receive tailored support, professional communications and marketing direction and advice, and support with their recruitment, media, digital and communications activities. Given the scale of change, both internally and externally to the University, it is vital that the Director of External Relations has a strong track record in leading and managing significant change in an organisation of comparable scale and complexity.
